Interesting Article About Praise [Feb. 20th, 2007|06:52 pm]

The whole "ooh, don't hurt the self-esteem!" thing has become almost cliched; it shows up in The Incredibles, for one. My brother sent me a link to an article that I think is really interesting, about what over-praising kids really does. As someone who was told from an early age how smart I am, I can see a lot of truth here; it wasn't until I got out on my own that I figured out that smart is good, but smart and diligent is what makes the difference.

Anyway, the article is here.

My name is Patric and I have a daughter named Adeline who is about to turn a month old in a couple days. I love my child and wife. I was able to take off a month of work and I have to back next week, but I don't want too. Although there have been some frustrating times I would rather take care of a smelly diaper then deal with some of the trash I see. I am a Deputy Sheriff working at a county jail. Anyway, I will diffently be posting here, seems like everyone here are pretty cool.

Update, and a question.. [Jan. 2nd, 2007|12:49 am]

update firstCollapse )

the "problem" is that we're still living w/ his parents, which is good b/c we dont have to pay rent..

but it's bad b/c there is NO room for another baby..

and he makes.. hourly wage.. but i'm not sure if it'd be enough for us to purchase a house *why we're living w/ his parents in the first place*

i was lucky enough to not have to go to work after my daughter was born.. and i'd like to keep it that way..

i am worried about going back to school and being pregnant also.. though the option of online courses is always there

any help/love/advice would be greatly appreciated, as i know that this really stresses him out

thanks
Elle

Hey there all you dads (and moms). I found this community through my wife urban_homestead and it seemed like a good place for me. A little about me and mine...

Our son, Arthur, is 20-months old, intensely adventurous, active and well, a nice little boy. We just have the one child but would like to have at least one more when Arthur is a little (but not too much) older and not quite as much to handle.

Most of my youth, when not in school, was spent leading wilderness canoe trips and teaching outdoor skills. It's still something I have a passion for, but I've settled down to a real business job as an analyst in the financial sector. I read a lot, mostly fantasy and sci-fi, something I share with my wife and hope to share with Arthur. I've always been a big gamer: role-playing, board games, computer games. I listen to a wide variety of music, pretty much whatever grabs my attention and feels good to me. I'm not really a big sports fan, except for hockey - I'm one of those unfortunate ones, a true-blue Leafs fan.

As much as I like to share my interests with Arthur, and hope that he can enjoy them with me, right now I'm just letting him learn about stuff, everything and anything. Mostly I encourage him to explore and experience things for himself. I like to introduce him to a variety of things and then see where he wants to go from there. I've found it's fun just to see what he'll come up with, and watch as his own tastes slowly develop.

Hello all!

Thought I’d take a quick moment to introduce myself to the community…

My name is Craig and I’m from Long Island. My wife and I are expecting our first in May. I am a database developer as well as a project archivist, and have done some freelance work for both. When I’m not insane from work, I’m a big time reader, love spending relaxing time outdoors during beach season, and listen to some eclectic types of music.  I’m pretty open about my life so feel free to ask anything you want. I’m sure I’ll have some questions as various issues come up during the pregnancy and during our baby’s first few months, but I just wanted to say hello and make a few contacts along the way…

Activities for a Zombie Daddy [Oct. 29th, 2006|09:29 pm]

This is probably being posted too late to help me for tomorrow morning, but it may still prove handy when Tuesday morning comes.

Nigel, my nearly-2yo, has the waking portion of his body clock pretty damn fixed. The beginning of the year, he was waking between 4:30-5:30am each morning. No matter how we tried shifting his sleep patterns, his body kept waking him at that time. When Daylight Savings came along, he was now waking between 5-6am. A tiny bit of a shift, but it would have been nice for a full hour shift. Today when picking the boys up from a sleepover at my wife's parents' house, I was told that Nigel was up at 4:30am.

I am trying to accept the reality that I'll likely be up around that time tomorrow morning. Are there any other dads out there who aren't morning people that can suggest something better than me putting a show on the TV while I half-doze next to him on the couch? We are trying to stay quiet since the 4 yo and Mommy are still sleeping (hopefully until 7-7:30).

I feel like such a bad parent when I do that for more than 30 minutes...but my brain just isn't functioning that well even after the 23ish minutes it takes to watch the typical Noggin show.
